Cirrhosis Is a Key Concern

  • The single greatest risk factor for development of HCC is cirrhosis, which is present in 80% to 90% of patients who develop HCC6
  • The risk factors that lead to the development of HCC vary by geographic region7
    • Up to 70% of patients in Europe or North America present with cirrhosis from hepatitis C infection
    • 70% of patients in Asia or Africa (excluding Japan) present with cirrhosis from hepatitis B infection
    • 70% of patients in Japan present with cirrhosis from hepatitis C infection
    • 10% of those patients present with cirrhosis from alcohol use in the absence of hepatitis C or hepatitis B infection globally
    • <10% of those patients present with cirrhosis from other causes* globally

    *Which includes haemochromatosis and aflatoxin B1 intake from contaminated food.
